Alphabricks: Jesus

Snap Shot

It would not be possible to write a single Alphabrick about the Lord Jesus when the volume of the Book (Bible) is written of Him (cf. Hebrews 10:7; Psalm 40:7). Thus, in the seven Alphabricks levels, five times the letter ‘J’ will be about Him as we articulate 10 must-know things about the Lord.

The first two are:

1. He always was;
2. He was Co-creator.

He Always Was

While on the Isle of Patmos, the Apostle John had an encounter with the risen Christ who share with him,

“I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, “who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty” (Revelation 1:8 ESV).

Alpha is the first, Omega, the last, letter in the Greek alphabet; thus, the Lord uses the Greek alphabet—its beginning and ending—as an illustration that testifies to His eternal being.

In the Old Testament, the prophets prophesied of the Lord’s coming, and gave Him divine names:

• Isaiah calls Him “The Mighty God, the Everlasting Father” (cf. Isaiah 9:6, 7), and “Immanuel,” God with us (7:14).
Jeremiah refers to Him as “The Lord Our Righteousness [Jehovah Tsidkenu]” (cf. Jeremiah 23:6).
• David speaks of Him as “My Lord” (Psalm 110:1–7).

Not only did Jesus fulfill these, and all other Old Testament prophecies (over 300) with his life as recorded in the New Testament, the Apostle John also wrote of His eternal nature,

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God” (John 1:1 KJV).

Jesus Himself testifies to John’s witness with His prayer, prior to his fateful walk to the Garden of Gethsemane,

“And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was” (John 17:5 KJV, emphasis mine).

Indeed, Jesus always ‘was.’

He Was Co-Creator

A reference to the glory which Jesus had with the Father before the world was, can be seen at the creation in Genesis 1:26,

“And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth (emphasis mine).”

The “us” indicates the oneness of God distinct in three persons (see Alphabricks ‘T’) and is used three other times in the Old Testament: Genesis 3:22, 11:7; and Isaiah 6:8.

A natural illustration to the creation is God the Father spoke (the Words being God the Son) and God the Holy Spirit moved. However, Paul’s letter to the Colossians clarifies even the weak and limited natural illustration and sums up these first two points about Jesus:

“For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: And he is before all things, and by him all things consist” (Colossians 1:16-17 KJV).

Conclusion

It is important to know that Jesus Christ was “all God.” It is important to know that He was equal with the Father and Holy Spirit in nature by having all the attributes of God (see Alphabricks ‘O’).

Why?

Because there will be those who want to deny the deity of Christ (cf. Jude 4)—a denial that is of the antichrist:

“I write to you, not because you do not know the truth, but because you know it, and because no lie is of the truth. Who is the liar but he who denies that Jesus is the Christ? This is the antichrist, he who denies the Father and the Son” (1 John 2:21-22 ESV).
