“My voice is clear, my voice is pure, my voice speaks the truth and I say, come and cleanse yourself in my fountain! Come and cleanse yourself and be made clean! For it is a highway of holiness and only the pure and holy can travel on it!”
After sharing with us the voice not to listen to, the Holy Spirit contrasts His voice that we are to heed. Several things spoke to me regarding His voice.
The First Characteristic of God’s Voice: Clear and Pure
Its character is clear and pure, and I was reminded of Revelation 1:15 (NASB), “His feet were like burnished bronze, when it has been made to glow in a furnace, and His voice was like the sound of many waters.”
And while I realize the Scripture speaks to the “sound” of His voice, my mind pictures the roar of a crystal-clear waterfall crashing down on the pool below. It is a crashing that is heard from afar and is one that commands attention.
The Second Characteristic of God’s Voice: True
Its content is truth because Christ is truth and only speaks truth; whereas, in contrast, in Satan’s voice there is no truth.
I believe Satan is incapable of telling the truth. Jesus describes Satan’s nature in a conversation with certain Jews, “You are of your father the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth because there is no truth in him. Whenever he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of lies” (John 8:44 NASB).
This is not to say the adversary will not quote truth, but it will be a “letter” only truth. It will be void of context and genuine meaning. Satan simply cannot tell the truth because no truth is in him.
And I believe that God can only tell truth:
• In word, “in the hope of eternal life, which God, who cannot lie, promised long ages ago” (Titus 1:2 NASB);
• In deed, “Let no one say when he is tempted, ‘I am being tempted by God’; for God cannot be tempted by evil, and He Himself does not tempt anyone” (James 1:13 NASB).
The Third Characteristic of God’s Voice: Cleansing
It is cleansing. The cleansing power of the word begins with our salvation:
“You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you.”
– John 15:3 (NASB)
The cleansing power of the word continues as we heed it in our daily walk:
“So that He might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word.”
– Ephesians 5:26 (NASB)
The Bottom Line
What is the bottom line for me? Stay in His word!
