Whatcha Thinkin’?: The Helmet of Salvation & Your Mind

Thoughts on the Helmet of Salvation and the Battle for Your Mind

Wisdom wrote, “For as he thinks within himself, so he is…” (Proverbs 23:7 NASB). Thus, in life, our mind can be a very dangerous and destructive place, or it can be a venue for life, unity, and purity.

Scripture is plain as to the dangers of the mind towards the eternity the Lord desires for us. It is where the adversary begins his assault and then continues his battle against our heavenly everlasting:

• “in whose case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelieving so that they might not see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God” (2 Corinthians 4:4 NASB);

• “because the mind set on the flesh is hostile toward God; for it does not subject itself to the law of God, for it is not even able to do so” (Romans 8:7 NASB);

• “So this I say, and affirm together with the Lord, that you walk no longer just as the Gentiles also walk, in the futility of their mind” (Ephesians 4:17 NASB).

This highly-targeted battle of the mind is why, I believe, the Lord gives us the helmet of salvation as armor in our warfare.

With this head covering our mind can be shielded by the adversary’s onslaught of both blatant lies and subtle innuendo. Our precious salvation is to be the “protection” of our thinking. We are to safeguard that salvation with how we think.

That protection begins with the renewing of our minds in that salvation as we love God with “…all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind” (Matthew 22:37 KJV); and the loving of our neighbor as our self, “Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind regard one another as more important than yourselves” (Philippians 2:3 NASB).

It continues by thinking on whatever is true, honorable, right, pure, lovely, and of good repute (see Philippians 4:8 NASB).

It concludes with the constant reminder to have Christ’s mind. “Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 2:5 KJV).

So, what are we thinking today? Is our helmet of salvation on and working? For if not, it could temporarily become a party hat without depth of function.
