“The LORD your God will clear away these nations before you little by little. You may not make an end of them at once, lest the wild beasts grow too numerous for you” (Deuteronomy 7:22 ESV).
In Exodus 23:28-31, Israel received some very distinct knowledge concerning the Canaan wars: a minimum timeframe, general strategy, heartening rationale, and the boundaries of their successful campaign.
This knowledge was priceless. Being aware of a timeframe would keep them from quitting prematurely in utter frustration.
Knowing this “little by little” strategy would keep them encouraged. They could now recognize their ongoing battles would consistently be won.
Additionally, this “little by little” rationale revealed the Lord’s continued concern for Israel. He would not give them victories that would paradoxically destroy them.
Finally, seeing the final boundaries would give the warriors a concrete hope for the finished prize.
Can you see the Lord’s same concern for us in the war for our promised land?
We know that the battle won’t be won quickly. Rather, it will be done by degrees. As Jesus said, “in your patience possess ye your souls” (Luke 21:19 KJV).
By knowing His care and concern in the battle, we are assured of His love.
“I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore I have continued my faithfulness to you” (Jeremiah 31:3 ESV).
By being aware of the final prize, His word is confirmed and it offers personal encouragement.
“For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end” (Jeremiah 29:11 KJV).
