The Name Above Every Name

There is a Name above every name.

Some may claim the Name while others may vie for it; yet, both efforts are futile.

There are those who may go as far as having the same name in the natural, even spelled the same way; yet, it is still not the Name.

Over the next several weeks I am going to be writing about the Name that is above every name.

We will see where the Name is a Person; we will see where the Name is His Name.

Among other things we will see where His Name denotes His character and work; meditate upon the spiritual experiences in His Name; exercise the authority in His Name; and embrace the varied aspects of “being” in His Name.

And we will see where it is His Name alone.

His work was determined before the foundation of the world, before there was an evening and a morning or years and seasons; yet, He was named in the fullness of time.

He was all man; yet, He was all God too.

He was sinless; yet, was made to be sin for us so that we could be saved from sin.

The Name is His Name.

And His Name is Jesus.

It was told to His earthly mother,

“And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name Him Jesus” (Luke 1:31 NASB);

it was told to His earthly father,

“She will bear a Son; and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins” (Matthew 1:21 NASB).

The Name is known by angels,

“The angel said to the women, ‘Do not be afraid; for I know that you are looking for Jesus who has been crucified’” (Matthew 28:5 NASB);

the Name is known by devils,

“And, behold, they [two possessed with devils] cried out, saying, What have we to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of God? art thou come hither to torment us before the time?” (Matthew 8:29 KJV)

And it is a name that can be known to you and to me,

“But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name” (John 1:12 KJV).

And finally, it is the Name to which all will someday bow,

“Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father” (Philippians 2:9-11 KJV).
